Speaking at the Beyond Now Summit: The Business Behind the Brand

Julz took the stage at the Beyond Now Summit in New York City — a forward-thinking conference bringing together athletes, creators, and industry leaders to explore what's next in sports, business, and culture. Sponsored by Shopify and Summer Discovery, the event brought high school and college athletes face-to-face with the people shaping the future of the industry.

On the "Inside the Game" panel — moderated by Kent Padgett and featuring speakers from Snap, the Chicago Bulls, and more — Julz shared the real story behind building a multi-million dollar brand. Here are some highlights from the conversation:

Lightning Round: How did you get into sports?

"I do brand management and strategy specializing in NIL, and I got into sports through my family. I was an athlete all throughout high school, my dad was a college athlete, and my sister was a gymnast at LSU."

You don't have to play the sport to work in it

"Just because you didn't play a sport or participate in the sport doesn't mean you can't work in the sport. I've never done gymnastics a day in my life and I work with gymnasts all the time. If you played softball and you want to report on hockey — go do hockey."

On handling rejection

"Rejection is inevitable and you have to keep going and persist. If I'm reaching out to someone and I don't get a response, I just assume I'm not talking to the right person — and I end up climbing the ladder higher and higher until you do get that response. Because you'll get it. Never go low — always go higher."

One thing you can do this week to move the needle

"Pick up the phone and post. If you want to do sports analytics, make content about sports analytics. If you want to do broadcasting, interview your high school team — start at your level. My sister didn't get her platform and her following the day she got to college. She had that in the work. She started in high school, made content that she liked to see, and aligned herself with where she is now. So pick up the phone and just start."

On building your brand beyond sports

"It's really important to show who you are outside of your sport and build those pillars — because they will guide you while building your brand."

It was a full-circle moment — going from behind the scenes to center stage, sharing the playbook with a room full of aspiring athletes and creators ready to build something of their own.
