AthleteCon 3.0: The Anatomy of a Viral Post with Julz Dunne

This year, I had the privilege of returning to AthleteCon for the second consecutive year on behalf of the Livvy Fund, an experience that continues to be one of the most rewarding opportunities in the NIL industry. As the only NIL convention that provides student-athletes with live brand deal opportunities, AthleteCon brings together athletes, brands, and industry leaders who are actively shaping the future of college sports. This year, I was proud to help bring one of our brand partners, Junkless, into the event. In addition to sponsoring the Wellness Night, with product from Accelerator, and hosting a booth, Junkless participated in the brand deal competition and awarded a student-athlete a partnership opportunity—exactly the kind of authentic, career-building NIL experience the Livvy Fund strives to create.

Throughout the three-day event, I had the opportunity to share my expertise through my presentation, "The Anatomy of a Viral Post," where I broke down the storytelling, content strategy, and audience-building techniques that help athletes grow their platforms and attract brand partnerships. I also joined the "Athlete to Entrepreneur Playbook" panel alongside Cade Higgins, C.J. Watson, and Morgan Williams, moderated by Grant House, to discuss the evolving opportunities available to athletes beyond competition. The weekend concluded with Livvy being named Creator of the Year at the AthleteCon Awards, an honor I was proud to accept on behalf of the Livvy Dunne team. Seeing student-athletes eager to learn, build their brands, and create meaningful opportunities for themselves reminds me why this work is so important. It is incredibly fulfilling to help educate the next generation of athletes in an industry that I have been fortunate to help shape from the very beginning.

Content Strategy

"It's time to be storytellers. It's time to turn your information into education and be done with telling people what you do, and start telling people how you do it."

Your Greatest NIL Advantage

"Your authority in NIL is your status as an athlete. Give the audience a reason to listen to you. Tell them why they should be listening to you."

Breaking Barriers for Brand Building

"Step zero is getting out of your own way. There is an audience for everything. You are a student athlete at a school with your name on the roster — the built-in fan base is there."

Keynote Speaker at Graduation of Wall High School Business and Finance Academy

I was honored to serve as the keynote speaker for the Wall High School Business & Finance Academy Graduation, where I had the opportunity to share a message that has shaped my own journey: life is filled with expectations, but, sometimes, the unexpected is what leads to your path. Drawing from my experience transitioning from a pre-med student to building a career in sports marketing, athlete branding, and the creator economy, I encouraged graduates to embrace change, stay open to new opportunities, and trust themselves when life takes an unexpected turn. Speaking to a room filled with ambitious future business leaders was incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful to Wall High School for the opportunity to celebrate the Class of 2026 and help inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs, innovators, and professionals.

Embracing uncertainty and career pivots

"Sometimes it's the unexpected that leads you to your path — and even your passion."

Leadership, entrepreneurship, and innovation

"There was no path to follow, so we had to make some of our own and figure it out."

Growth through opportunity and adaptability

"None of it came from the path that I thought I was on when I graduated high school, but it did come from keeping my eyes open and leaning into those unexpected moments."

Julz Dunne speaking on panel at the Beyond Now Summit NYC

Speaking at the Beyond Now Summit: The Business Behind the Brand

Julz took the stage at the Beyond Now Summit in New York City — a forward-thinking conference bringing together athletes, creators, and industry leaders to explore what's next in sports, business, and culture. Sponsored by Shopify and Summer Discovery, the event brought high school and college athletes face-to-face with the people shaping the future of the industry.

On the "Inside the Game" panel — moderated by Kent Padgett and featuring speakers from Snap, the Chicago Bulls, and more — Julz shared the real story behind building a multi-million dollar brand. Here are some highlights from the conversation:

Lightning Round: How did you get into sports?

"I do brand management and strategy specializing in NIL, and I got into sports through my family. I was an athlete all throughout high school, my dad was a college athlete, and my sister was a gymnast at LSU."

You don't have to play the sport to work in it

"Just because you didn't play a sport or participate in the sport doesn't mean you can't work in the sport. I've never done gymnastics a day in my life and I work with gymnasts all the time. If you played softball and you want to report on hockey — go do hockey."

On handling rejection

"Rejection is inevitable and you have to keep going and persist. If I'm reaching out to someone and I don't get a response, I just assume I'm not talking to the right person — and I end up climbing the ladder higher and higher until you do get that response. Because you'll get it. Never go low — always go higher."

One thing you can do this week to move the needle

"Pick up the phone and post. If you want to do sports analytics, make content about sports analytics. If you want to do broadcasting, interview your high school team — start at your level. My sister didn't get her platform and her following the day she got to college. She had that in the work. She started in high school, made content that she liked to see, and aligned herself with where she is now. So pick up the phone and just start."

On building your brand beyond sports

"It's really important to show who you are outside of your sport and build those pillars — because they will guide you while building your brand."

It was a full-circle moment — going from behind the scenes to center stage, sharing the playbook with a room full of aspiring athletes and creators ready to build something of their own.
